IOT: Internet of Things

20180505 The Internet of Things (IoT) refers to devices sitting in your home, for example, connected to the Internet. We often refer to these devices as edge devices. These might include baby monitoring cameras, washing machines, home lights, and so on.

Because these devices are connected to the Internet they can provide data that is stored somewhere centrally on some other Internet computer. We call this storing data in the cloud.

By storing data in the cloud, for example from a specific manufacturer's washing machine, the manufacturer (or others) can analyse that massive collection of data to provide better services. For example, it will be possible to predict when the washing machine might be heading towards a breakdown and advise the customer, with he evidence, that a new part is required, preemptively.

Individual and independent developers are beginning to provide such cloud-based services, in addition to the traditional manufacturers. In this chapter we review open source platforms built using Linux.
