wajig update; wajig distupgrade; sudo reboot
wajig install update-manager-core
sudo do-release-upgrade

Upgrade Ubuntu 22.10 to 23.04 20230425 Utilising command line do-release-upgrade to Lunar Lobster. Both updates went smoothly. Some issues.

  • Gnome Shell extensions that don’t yet support Gnome 44 (even with the version checking turned off) are sound-output-device-chooser, wireguard-indicator, and workrave.

  • Trialled Wayland but X2Go could not then display so reverted to Ubuntu on X11. It may need Exec=env QT_QPA_PLATFORM=xcb x2goclient in ~/.local/share/applications/X2GoAgent.desktop (to be tested).

  • Flutter presented some challenges with what looks like cached paths. Re-clone and mostly working again.

  • linode-cli stopped working. Had to add --break-system-packages to pip3 install to get pip working and linode-cli working again.

Upgrade Ubuntu 22.04 to 22.10 20230425 Utilising command line do-release-upgrade to Kinetic Kudu as a pathway to upgrading to the recently released 23.04. Got a message that the upgrade has aborted because it needs 262M on ‘/boot’ which is 98.4M more than currently available. A few old kernel removals fixed that and restarted the upgrade. Then it noted that blender gimp resolvconf vlc zoom will be removed.

Upgrade Ubuntu 21.10 to 22.04 20220430 Utilised command line do-release-upgrade to Jammy Jellyfish. Initially got a No space left on device error for mkinitramfs but that sorted itself out after some further manual update/upgrades. Zoom background focus now froze up though. Flutter build was now failing, but worked after moving to the manual rather than snap install. Display powersave only blanks and does not turn off the display, unlike xset dpms force off see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-settings-daemon/+bug/1971434. Totem failed to play videos until the packge gstreamer1.0-vaapi was removed.

Upgrade Ubuntu 21.04 to 21.10 20211021 Utilised command line do-release-upgrade to Impish Indri. Ubuntu (Wayland) would not start so reverted to Ubuntu on Xorg. Everything else seems fine after updating some GNOME shell extensions (dash-to-panel, frippery move clock, open weather, panel date format). The workrave panel extension is not working though. An update resolved that. Wayland works after removing some very old (1990’s) DISPLAY environment variable manipulation in .bashrc. However, screen capture software (SimpleScreenRecorder and OBS) don’t work with Wayland.

Upgrade Ubuntu 20.10 to 21.04 20210615 Utilised command line do-release-upgrade with -d. Wayland would not start so reverted to Ubuntu on Xorg. Everything else seems just fine.

Upgrade Ubuntu 19.10 to 20.04 20200502 Utilised command line do-release-upgrade. No backup required since all of the project work and the system configurations are stored remotely in a git repository and documents are kept on a nextcloud server.

All went smoothly and after removing snd_hda_intel.dmic_detect=0 from /etc/default/grub sound was fully functional, including the microphones for the first time, noting that the required module snd_soc_skl_hda_dsp was loaded at boot.
