To build a modern, them-based, simple, static web site using templates and Markdown, jekyll is recommended.

To install on Ubuntu:

wajig install ruby-full build-essential zlib1g-dev

cat <<EOF >> ~/.bashrc

# Install Ruby Gems to ~/gems

export GEM_HOME="$HOME/gems"
export PATH="$HOME/gems/bin:$PATH"
EOF
source ~/.bashrc

gem install jekyll bundler
